It has a espasmolítica, hypotensile activity, by peripheral vasodilatación and increase of the diuresis. Hipolipemiante. Antiinflamatorio.
They have been verified that different protéicas fractions from muérdago have a noticeable antitumorlike activity (lectinas, lignanos, viscotoxina).
Indications
Hypertension, prevention of arteriosclerosis, renal litiasis, rheumatic affections, postoperating treatments pre and of malignant tumors. Externally: papilomas, condilomas. Some authors consider that muérdago mainly exerts its oncostática activity in administration by parenteral route, and that by oral route requires several months before being effective.
Contraindications
Cardiopathies, treatment with cardiotónicos (muérdago contains glucósido with cardiotónica action, the viscoflavina). Renal insufficiency. Hepatopatías. Treatments with IMAO (to see precautions).
Pregnancy, lactancia, children, hepatopatías, by the presence of alkaloids, specially the viscalbina.
Not to prescribe forms of metering with alcoholic content for oral administration to smaller children of two years nor to consultantes in process of etílica deshabituación.
Precaution/Poisonings
To prescribe in form of discontinuous and progressive treatments, beginning by low doses. The active principles of muérdago are termosensibles. To use forms preferredly stabilized galéncias.
The berries are highly toxic, by their content in viscotoxina: the ingestion of 15 of them cause poisoning in form of nervous and cardiac alterations. 25 berries can cause the death by depression of the respiratory and cardiac centers bulbares.
A case of hepatitis related to the ingestion has been described of prepared with muérdago (D'Arcy, 1995: 201-2).
Precaution: The viscotoxina has a local necrotizante action.
Its use in the presence of hypertension, cardiopathies or moderate renal insufficiency or burdens, it only must become by prescription and under medical checkup.
By its content in tiramina, muérdago can trigger hypertensive crises in patients who are following an antidepressing treatment with IMAO.
To consider the alcoholic content of the fluid extract and the dye.
Galénicas Forms/Dosage

- Infusion: a teaspoon of coffee by cup, to instill 10 minutes. Two cups to the day, after the meals.
- Dust: 1 to 1'5 g to the day, in 200 capsules of mg.
- fluid Extract (1:1): 20 to 30 drops, one to three times to the day.
- It tinctures (1:10): 30 drops, three times to the day.
- Juice of fresh plant: 2-7,5 mililiter, one to three times to the day.
