Heterósidos cardiotónicos of cardenólido type: evonósido (ramnósido of the digitogenina). In the leaves there is isolated teofilina and caffein. In the fruits, teobromina.
In the seeds it has 25-30% of oil, formed by glicéridos of acids oléico, linoléico, palmítico and esteárico.
By its potential toxicity, its use is not recommendable.
Contraindications
Treatment with cardiotónicos.
Precaution/Poisonings
To doses superior to 100-250 mg, the evonina produces gastrointestinales, by its powerful laxative action, diarreas cólicos sanguinolentas, general weakness, hallucinations, convulsions, loss of conscience and síncopes, being able to cause the death.
The accidental ingestion of the fruits on the part of the children is specially frequent (a pair of them cause toxic sintomatología).
