Celtas and the Roman ones already cultivated coles, the vegetable par excellence. Col has been coming using for more than 2,000 years like food, and also like medicine.
Habitat: native of Europe, where is wild in the coasts of the English Channel, the Atlantic and the western Mediterranean. It is cultivated anywhere in the world.
Description: it plants of the family of the crucíferas, with great leaves very divided and of fleshy consistency. It lacks cogollo.

Properties and indications: the leaves are rich in chlorophyll, and therefore in magnesium. They also contain a sulfurated essence similar to the one of mineral mustard, salts, vitamins (mainly the C, the A, and possibly the U), mucílagos, and not a well identified antiulceroso factor still. He is relatively rich in glúcidos or carbon hydrates (7%) and proteins (4%), but its greasy content is very under (0,6%). Coles has the following properties:
Antiulcerosa: internally, its juice is recommended against the gastroduodenal ulcer, that is able to heal. Doctor Schneider, in its work "La health by nutrición", he mentions experiences in which the healing capacity of the fresh juice of col has been demonstrated on the gastroduodenal ulcer. After four or five days to administer a glass before each food, the stomach ache disappeared. To the three weeks, the treatment of the ulcer was obtained. This antiulcerosa action is still attributed to not well well-known vitamin U.
Antianémica, antiescorbútica and hipoglucemiante (it makes descend the level from sugar in blood of the diabetics).
Diurética, purifying, and, consumed in uninformed, vermifugal.
Healing and vulneraria: col, applied in cataplasm, cures wounded infected, varicose ulcers and tórpidas, eccemas, furúnculos and acne.
Anticancerous: evidences of which col can act like preventive of the formation of cancerous tumors, possibly due to their carotene content exist (vitamin A).
Use: the juice of the fresh plant, of means to a glass, 3 or 4 daily times, before the meals, that is to say, with the empty stomach. In order to apply in cataplasms, the leaves crude (previously crushed with a roller or cylindrical bottle), either, cooked and mixed with bran to make them the more compact.
Precautions: when col of form continued during long periods is consumed, it can have antitiroideo effect and get to cause goiter.
