Zingiberaceae.

Description

Perennial grass, acaule, with rizomas aromatic of shining yellow color in its interior. Leaves with long pecíolos; oblong or elliptical limb, of 30 to 50 cm in length and of 8 to 18 cm. wide, close towards the base and acuminado in the apex. Yellow flowers grouped in showy basal ears, accompanied by violáceas brácteas. Capsular, globoso fruit, 3-valvo; ovoid seeds, commonly areladas.

Fenología

Geofita of rizoma. It blooms between July and October and fruit formation has not been observed. After the flowering the foliage is dried (December-January) and the following year reappears between May and June.

Location

Barely cultivated in Cuba. Occasionally culture escape, mainly in mountainous regions of the central and Eastern regions.

Warnings

The dust of rizomas can produce allergy by contact in skin. The toxicológica evaluation is incomplete.

Other uses

Like condimento (curry). Rizomas contains a yellow colorante matter. It is used in addition as indicating to determine the acidity of means (it changes of yellow to red carmelitoso in the presence of alkalis).

Components

Rizoma contains a rich essential oil in monoterpenos (borneol, camphor, terpineno and others) and sesquiterpenos (tumerona, atlantona and curcumenol).
