Astringent in the extreme. Uterine hemorrhages, leucorrea, blenorragia, hemorroides and fissures of the anus. Its fruit, the acorn, being astringent, is a suitable food in case of diarreas.
External use: In rinsings and garglings for affections of the mouth and throat. Vaginal irrigations. Baths of seat for affections of the anus and rectum. Baths of arms for sabañones. In compresas for affections of the skin. Ocular washings and nasal obstructions.
Used Part
Nutgalls, crust of young branches and occasionally the fruits of the species: Quercus robur L. (= pedunculata Quercus Ehrh.) or of petraea Quercus (Matt.) Liebl. (= sessiliflora Quercus Salisb.).
Active Principles
Abundant tannins (10-20% in the crust, 50-70% in the nutgalls), acids gálico (2-4%) and elágico, proantocianósidos; sitosterol, resins, flavonoides (quercitrósido), pectina, floroglucina.
Farmacológica Action
Astringent: healing, hemostatic when producing local vasoconstricción, by precipitation of proteins, antidiarréico. Antiinflamatorio, antibacterial, antiviral, antipyretic, appetizer. Diurético.
Incompatible with treatments with pectina, alkaloids or salts of iron.
Not to prescribe oral forms of metering with alcoholic content to smaller children of two years nor to consultantes in process of etílica deshabituación.
Indirect effect
By the abundance in tannins it can produce gastric irritation, vomits. In order to palliate we recommended it to take after the meals, associate to demulcentes drugs, like the malvavisco. In case of appearing these annoyances, to suspend the treatment or to reduce the dose to half.
Precaution/Poisonings
To prescribe preferredly after the meals and in form of you cure discontinuous.
To consider the alcoholic content of the fluid extract.
Galénicas Forms/Dosage
Internal use:
- Infusion (leaves): a spoonful of dessert by cup. To instill 10 minutes. Three cups to the day.
- Decocción (root, nutgalls): 5 g by liter, to boil 10 minutes. Three cups to the day, after the meals.
- Dust (nutgalls, crust): 3 g to the day, in 500 capsules of mg.
- fluid Extract (1:1): 20-50 drops, two or three times to the day.
External use:
- Decocción (nutgalls, crust and/or leaves): 60-80 g/l, to boil 10 minutes. To apply in form of washings, vaginal compresas, colutorios, garglings or irrigations. For colutorios or garglings, to prepare concentrated it less: 15 g by liter. For ocular washings, to 5% and to isotonizar before its application.
- Dust of nutgalls or oficinal tannin: directly applied on the wound or ulceración.
