Dioscórides already recommended this plant in century I d.C. like hemostatic antidiarreica and. Its use follows effective, and since then it has contributed to heal to many patients, children and adults. By his tannin content, it has been used for the tanning of skins.

Habitat: common in humid meadows, pools and shores of streams and rivers of all Europe. Naturalized in the American continent.

Description: it plants vivaz of the family of the Litráceas, raised, robust stem and of quadrangular section, that reaches up to 1.5 ms of height. Their leaves are looked like those of the willow, and the flowers are of purple pink color, in ear.

Used parts: the flowery sumidades.

Properties and indications: it contains until a 15% of tannins to which it must to his action astringent and antidiarreica; pectina and mucílagos, that make emollient (suavizante of skin and inflamed mucous); as well as flavonoides and antocianinas of antiinflammatory action. These are their indications:

Diarreas, gastroenteritis, disenterías, colitis: specially useful in serious cases, when there is emission of blood or snot. It has been used successfully in the salmonelosis and the tifoidea fever. Very appropriate to fight the diarreas of the suckling babies, as much in baby's bottle as in lavativa, associated to a suitable regime (carrot, white rice, flour of carob bean, etc.).

Ulceras varicose, hurt infected, eccemas and dermatosis: it has a remarkable healing and regenerative effect of epidermis.

Vaginitis, leucorrea and metrorragias (vaginal hemorrhages outside the menstruation), previous facultative control. It is applied in vaginal irrigations.

Use: in infusion of 40 or 60 grams of flowery sumidades by liter, water; they interfere of 3 to 8 daily cups.

For external use, lotions and compresas with a decocción of 100 to 150 grams by liter. Also it is used this vaginal decocción for washings and irrigations.
