Description: it plants trepadora of the family of the Convolvuláceas, whose stem grows enroscado around other plants. The flowers are great, they are born of the armpits of the leaves, and have pink or red color. The roots are tuberosas and round, and are full of a resinous milky juice.
Habitat: original of Mexico, concretely of the state of Veracruz, of whose capital, Jalapa Enríquez, it takes his name.

The roots (tubercles).
Active Principles
Glucorresina (9-18%), of complex structure: jalapina, convulvulina (heterósidos of hidroxilados fatty acids); escopoletol; glucósido: ipuranol. Alkaloids.
Farmacológica Action
To low doses: laxative, colagogo.
To greater doses it presents/displays a violent laxative effect: the glucorresina destroys some lipídicos components of the intestinal membrane, which causes an exaggerated increase of the peristaltismo and great flow of liquids to the interior of the intestinal light.

Biliary constipation, disquinesia. Long ago it was used in the treatment of the congestiva insufficiency cardiac, by the great elimination of liquids that produces.
The root of jalapa contains diverse carbon hydrates, and the glucósidos ones convolvulina and jalapina, that are their active principles. It has a strong laxative action, that in small doses well is tolerated, and does not produce cólicos. It is recommended when it is wanted to exert a drastic action on the intestine. Not to taste badly, he is useful to bleed the children. It also has vermifugal effect and emenagogo (it stimulates the menstruation).
Contraindications
Pregnancy, lactancia, syndrome of the null and voidable intestine, renal insufficiency, treatment with cardiotónicos.
Indirect effect
To doses elevated a little it produces violent cólicos, intestinal hemorrhages, nauseas and vomits.
Precaution/Poisonings
Due to the virulence of its mechanism of action and to its indirect effect, at the moment it is in disuse.
Use: dust is taken from root, of 1 to 3 grams dissolved in the middle water glass hot and sweetened with 1-2 spoonfuls of honey or brown sugar. The infantile dose is of 50 milligrams (0.05 g) by kilo of corporal weight.
Galénicas Forms/Dosage
Dust (referred doses to adults): 100-400 mg/día like laxative; 500mg-2g/di'a, like laxative.
