Before the arrival of Columbus, the old settlers of Mexico already used pazote by their medicinal properties. Their leaves and their flowers give off a strong scent due to the essential oil that contain.

Habitat: he is original of Mexico and Central America. Its culture has extended to the United States, South America and some countries of the Mediterranean, specially France.

Description: it plants herbaceous, vivaz or perennial, of the family of the Quenopodiáceas, that reaches from 40 to 100 cms. of height. It has the very graft stem. Their flowers, of yellowish or greenish color, are very small, and grow in terminal ears.

Used parts: the leaves and the flowers.

Properties and indications: the essence of pazote is constituted by terpénicos hydrocarbons (cimeno, limoneno, terpineno, etc.) and ascaridol. It has the following properties:

Stomach and carminativo tonic (it avoids intestinal gases): Its use gives very good results in the indigestiones, stomach aches, flatulencias and lack of appetite.

Antihelmíntico and vermifuge (it destroys the intestinal parasites). It is his more important application. It is highly effective against áscaris and the hookworms, and not as much against the tapeworms and the oxiuros.

Use: it is taken in infusion, with 15 or 20 grs. of leaves and flowers by each liter of water. Like stomach tonic, a cup is taken after each food. Like antihelmíntico, a cup in uninformed is taken in the morning, during 3 days. To administer a laxative after each taking of epazote, to favor the expulsion of the parasites (ricino, aloe or sagrada rind).

Precautions: not to exceed the indicated doses, since it can cause digestive intolerancia.
