The Zoapatle is described in the Badiano codex (recipe book náhuatl of century xvi): "When a woman has difficulty to eliminate the fetus or to give birth, it drinks a medicine done with the crust del tree cuauhalahuac and of the worn out grass cihuapahtli in water, with a stone that is called étzetl and tail of animalillo that is called tlacuatzin (tlacuache), quémense hairs and bones of monkey, hiel of hare and dried onions al sun, a fruit that we called nochtli (tuna) and octli (pulque). Native wild shrub of Mexico, grows in tropical and rainy regions of San Luis Potosí, Morelos, Puebla, Veracruz, Oaxaca and Tabasco. In Mexico it is cultivated frequently in the houses, in the domestic orchards and flowerpots. Also it is called acacóyotl, acuyo, small cord, leaf of ajan, leaf of anise, jaco, tlamapaquelite and tlanepaquelite.

It is distinguished by its leaves great in form of heart, membranosas and covered by a fine hair. Their flowers are long and the so narrow ears that they seem a mouse tail.

One has been used as condimento in the Mexican kitchen from pre-Hispanic times. Its flavoured with aniseed flavor very is appreciated in the elaboration of sauces, stews and tamales.
