He was or used like condimento or medicine by the Egyptians, because they have been conserved in some tombs. In the last centuries, their fruits have been replaced by those of the caraway, of similar properties although with a smoother flavor. Nevertheless, the cominos continue being an excellent condimento and medicine. The salads condimentadas with them exhalan finer a very pleasing aroma and satisfy to paladares. Also they are indispensable ingredient of some traditional candies, to which besides to lend his delicious flavor they make more digestibles.
Habitat: original of Asia western, and extended by all the Mediterranean region. Cultivated in some countries of America.
Description: Annual herbaceous plant, of the family of the Umbelíferas, that reaches the 50 cm of height. Their leaves are very fine, almost filiform. The fruits form at the end of the radii of umbelas, they measure of 5 to 6 millimeters in length, and have very noticeable ribs, made bristle of rough hairs.
Used parts: the fruits.
Properties and indications: they contain a 10% of etéreo oil, and one essence whose more important active principle is the cumínico or cuminal aldehyde. They are aperitive, digestive and carminativos (they make disappear intestinal gases). Also they provide a certain galactógeno effect, that is to say, that they favor the milk secretion of the mothers who lactan. These properties are common to the fruits of other Umbelíferas, like the caraway, the coriander and the anise, of which I mainly comine difference by its peculiar flavor.
Use: in infusion of 2 grs. of cominos (the end of a dessert teaspoon) whole or slightly crushed, by each water cup; one interferes a cup after the food and another one after the supper. To the babies it is possible later to be administered 2 or 3 spoonfuls to them of this same infusion of each food taking. Dust in dose of 1 gr. after each food, dissolved in water or milk. In essence to administer of 1 to 3 daily drops, 3 times.
Precautions: the essence does not have to be administered to the children, since it can cause convulsions to them.
