Although it can seem strange, the spices and sharp sauces perform an important function in the diet of the inhabitants of the tropic. Without them it would be difficult the conservation, and the digestion, of foods in warm climates. The good use of spices is one more a sample of popular wisdom.

Habitat: original of the island of Java, although extended to other tropical countries of Asia, Central America and the Antilles.

Description: it plants vivaz of the family of the Zingiberáceas, that even reaches

a meter of height. It presents/displays of 5 to 10 great leaves, with peciolo very long. The flowers are of white or yellowish color. Rizoma is voluminous, of up to 10 cms. of diameter.

Used parts: rizoma (underground stems).

Properties and indications: rizoma of cúrcuma contains an essential oil, pigments, a bitter principle, acid organic, draws resin from and starch. It is a stomach tonic similar to jengibre. It stimulates the secretion of gastric juice, and with it it facilitates the digestion of the inapetentes or dispépticos. It is used in case of chronic gastritis and hipoclorhidria (lack of hydrochlorate acid in the stomach). Also it has properties colagogas (facilitates the evacuating of the biliary vesicle) and carminativas (it avoids intestinal gases). It stimulates the secretion of gastric juice, and with it it facilitates the digestion of the inapetentes or dispépticos. It is used in case of chronic gastritis and hipoclorhidria (lack of hydrochlorate acid in the stomach). Also it has properties colagogas (facilitates the evacuating of the biliary vesicle) and carminativas (it avoids intestinal gases). In some Central American countries it is used to reduce the cholesterol level.

Use: in infusion with 15 or 20 grs., of rizoma by liter of water. A cup interferes during the food. In dust 1 gram daily distributed in 3 times is administered.
