Ácoro, Calamís

Plant coming from Asia, was introduced in Europe in century XIII by the tartars. Its aroma is very pleasant and remembers to the one of the mandarin, but its flavor is bitter. In the Arab countries it is used in essence like afrodisíaco.

Habitat: it grows in the borders of marshes, pools and rivers. One occurs in most of Europe, North America and also in Argentina. One is enough scattered and it is little frequents.

Description: it plants aquatic of the family of the Aráceas, that measures from 60 to 150 cms. of height. Their leaves are narrow and lanceoladas. The inflorescencia is a cylindrical ear.

Used part: they are used rizomas dried.

Properties and indications: rizoma of the reed contains a bitter essential oil, the Oleum calami, to which they must its medicinal effects. It has the following properties:

Appetizer: it increases the appetite.

Eupéptico (it facilitates the digestion): it is useful in cases from heavy digestion, shortage of gastric juice (hipoclorhidria), and chronic gastritis.

Carminativo: it eliminates gases of the digestive conduit.

Smooth muscular and sedative Relajante of the nervous system when it is applied externally, adding the decocción to the water of a hot bath. It alleviates the pain the rheumatics, and aid to conciliate the dream.

Tranquilizer of the picor of the skin in case of eruptions and urticaria. A bath with decocción by root of reed calms the picor and smooths the skin.

Use: in form of cofoundation at the rate of a small teaspoon by cup of tisane, three cups to the day half an hour before the meals. Also for external use, adding to the bath water a baking made with 1/2 kg of rizoma crushed by liter of water.
