Acanto is a giant grass pertaining to the family of the acantáceas; it has a graceful, elegant and very harmonious form. It has pretty reunited great leaves in a bush, with the curly end downwards. Each bush gives rise to one long ear, turgid and covered of small thorny leaves, whose armpits they leave the flowers, with petals of pale yellow color.
One grows up in torrents and shady, humid zones in winter. It blooms totally as of the month of May, drying itself in summer. Soon with rains it returns to appear again and it spends all the winter vegetating. Of the harvesting they interest the leaves, that they are due to gather and to put to dry in the shade or in dryer, to temperatures not very elevated.
Its beauty is very singular. It counts the legend that the famous escultor and architect of Corinto, Calímaco, was inspired by the plant of acanto when corintio created the capital.
All the plant, from the roots to the flowers, secretes a viscous liquid of emollient properties, very effective astringents and detergents. In fact, the composition of the plant is not known in depth. One knows that it contains abundant mucílago, tannins, glúcidos, mineral salts and some bitter principle. Of that it does not fit doubt is that it is a plant with emollient properties, this is, that has the capacity to soften weaves and tumors. Also other virtues like astringent, antidiarreico and expectorante are attributed to him. It is indicated in diarreas, bronchitis, colds, problems of liver and in external use in estomatitis, faringitis and vaginitis.
Decocción: 100 are boiled water g. with 10 g. of leaves of acanto, and with the obtained liquid they practice pinceladas on those inflamed parts of the mouth. If a little in boiling water stays more and it filters later through a piece of linen fabric, this preparation can be used to make garglings in case of throat inflammation.
Infusion: Putting 1 dry g. by roots and leaves in a boiling water cup, an excellent healing astringent and of wounds is obtained. The washing is due to do just before putting the bandage, and is advisable to repeat it a pair of times to the day.
