Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins. Our daily protein needs are actually amino acids. Amino acids are classified as "essential" or "nonessential. "
Essential amino acids (histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine) can not be manufactured by the body and must be supplied in the diet and its deficiency can cause health disorders. Nonessential amino acids are also essential for health but can be synthesized in the body for essential amino acids. Both amino acids, essential and nonessential, involved in the formation of hormones, enzymes, neurotransmitters (chemical messengers), antibodies and nutrient carriers.
The term "non-essential" can lead to misinterpretation. Although histidine was once considered an essential amino acid only in children, further research has determined that histidine may also be essential in adults. Arginine, ornithine, cysteine, cystine, taurine and tyrosine are classified as nonessential amino acids, but may be essential in individuals with certain diseases or nutritional deficiencies. Consuming less than optimal considered essential amino acids increases the body needs essential amino acids.
