Dioscórides, that lived in century I d.C., already knew the properties medicinal the fruits of the juniper, that of course, are used more for enough than to perfume spirits.

Habitat: common in stony lands and mountainous forests of all Europe. Naturalized in the American continent.

Description: shrub of the family of the Cupresáceas, that reaches of 1 to 3 m.s of height. Their leaves are perennial, short and sharp. Their fruits, the enebrinas, are small balls of blue or black color, of sweet and resinous flavor.

Properties and indications: the whole plant, and the berries in individual, contain a rich essential oil in terpenos. The berries contain, in addition glucose, draws resin from, organic acids and juniprina (glucósido bitter). The enebrinas have the following properties:

Diuréticas: the essential oil of the juniper has the effect to increase the filtration to glomerular in the kidneys, and with it the production of tinkles. Revulsivas: applied externally in frictions, the essence of juniper in alcoholic dissolution calms the pains the reumatismo and the artrosis.

Use: the mature enebrinas can be swallowed whole as a pills, 6 after each food, 3 daily times. In infusion of 30 grams of enebrinas by liter of water; to take daily up to 3 cups. Essence: 2 drops, 3 times to the day interfere. Externally, frictions of essence dissolved in alcohol, 20 to 30 drops of essence by each 100 mililiter of alcohol.

Precautions: its use in case of pregnancy and nefritis advises against, because in high doses they can produce albuminuria (albumen emission, a type of protein, with tinkles it).
