Trébol of water is used in fitoterapia from century XVI, because at being Mediterranean plant it did not get to be well-known by the doctors of classic Greece. Present mind is very little and in some countries it is a protected species.

Habitat: marshes, lagoons and pools of western Europe and North America. He is little frequent. In Spain one is solely in the pirenaica region.

Description: it plants aquatic vivaz, from 20 to 30 cms. of height, the family of the Meniantáceas. Its stem is heavy, fleshy and crawling, buried in the mud. The leaves are of length peciolo, divided in 3 foliolos, and flowers are of the pink and grouped color in terminal clusters.

Properties and indications: the leaves contain bitter glucósido (meniantina), person in charge of their tonic properties on the digestive apparatus. It increases the appetite, it stimulates digestive secretions and in general it favors the digestion. It is recommended in case of digestive atony, slowness of stomach or chronic gastritis. Their effects are similar to those of the genciana. It also contains flavonoides and alkaloids studied still, that could explain their febrífugas properties, laxative and emenagogas not well. It is used in the gripales states.

Use: in infusion with leaves (of 15 to 30 grams by liter), from which a cup is taken before each food. Also the juice is taken from the fresh plant, at the rate of about 20 mililiter dissolved in water or milk, 2-3 times every day. In dust they are administered of 2 to 3 grams distributed in 3 daily takings.

Precautions: in high doses he is laxative and vomiting (it causes the vomit).
