Place of origin: The west of Asia, the Caucasus.
Etimología: Prunus, Latin name of the wild plum tree. Cerasifera, of Cerasus, cherry tree and fertener. That it has or it produces cherries, perhaps alluding to his small plums.
Description: Arboriforme shrub or tree of up to 6-7 m of height with the opened, ascending branches. Smooth, dark crust. Ample and cleared glass. Foliage I expire. Alternating, simple, ovadas or elliptical leaves, of 2-7 cm. in length. They have the sawed edge, the acute apex and are glabras, with the exception of the central nerve in envés. They are of green color that becomes vinoso in the autumn. Generally solitary flowers, of 2-2,5 cm. of diameter, white or pink color. They appear before the leaves in the month of Marzo-Abril. The fruit is one drupa reddish-yellowish that measures about 2,5 cm. of diameter. Mature in the summer.
Culture and uses: It is multiplied by seeds and esquejes. The varieties by graft. It supports great variety of warm and cold climates. It vegetates well in limestone and poor grounds whenever it has the sufficient humidity. The extended variety more in gardening is ` Atropurpureá, also well-known like ` Pisardií (Prunus pisardii Carrière). In this variety the foliage is reddish-purple and the crust of the trunk is darker. The flowers are of target-pink color. Var. ' Nigrá still more has a dark foliage that the previous variety. It is used in gardening or like a shrub, with ramification from the base, or like a little tree, with the high cross. The color of its foliage contrasts with the green ones of other species. It allows the prunings, reason why it can be also used like high fence. Usually it is used like pattern to graft other varieties of plum trees.
