Latin: Chelidonium majus L.

Castilian: celandine, celidueña, verruguera, grass of the wanderers, grass of warts

English: celandine, chelandine, tetterwort.

Of the family of the Papaveráceas.

It does not have to be used internally by its toxicity.

External use: látex serves to cauterize warts.

Used Part

The flowery sumidades. Látex fresh.

Active Principles

Alkaloids of bencilisoquinoleínico type (0,1-0,5%): quelidonina, sanguinarina, queleritrina, protopina, berberina, coptisina, estilopina. Quelidónico Acido. Flavonoides. Saponósidos. Carotenoid. In látex: proteolytic enzymes.

Farmacológica Action

The celidonina is espasmolítica, analgesic, slightly sedative, Antitusiva, antiviral. The berberina is colagoga. The coptisina is queratolítica and antimitótica, reason why it is used like antiverrucosa. Some alkaloids present/display a antibacterial action.

Indications

Espasmos of the respiratory tree: biliary laringospasmos, broncospasmos, cough, dismenorreas, jaquecas, disquinesias, colecistitis, colelitiasis. In topical application it is used to treat the hiperqueratosis, corneous warts, condilomas and papilomas.

Contraindications

Pregnancy, lactancia, obstruction of the biliary routes (oral route).

Not to apply on nevus.

Precaution/Poisonings

By the abundance of alkaloids its use is not recommendable internally. It can cause narcosis, paralysis of the sensitive nervous completions, bradicardia and contracturas tetánifomes. It is considered that its administration of continued form can be oncogénica. In any case, we recommended, to prescribe short treatments, without surpassing the indicated doses.

One has described a case of anemia with intravascular hemólisis, renal failure, hepática citolisis and trombocitopenia after the oral ingestion of a celandine extract (Peris ET to, 1997).

Látex is dermocáustico, very irritating of the skin and the mucous.

Galénicas Forms/Dosage

Internal use:

- Infusion: 10 g/litro. To instill 10 minutes, one to three cups to the day.

- Dust: 200-300 mg/día.

- fluid Extract (1:1): 10-20 drops, one or twice to the day.

- It tinctures (1:5): 30-50 drops, one to three times to the day.

- dry Extract (5:1): 50-100 mg, one or twice to the day

Topical use:

- To rub warts two or three times to the day with látex fresh. To apply with gloves, protecting the surrounding zones with filante petroleum jelly.

- fluid Extract and glycerin to equal parts, like corn remover. To apply at night, after pediluvio warms up.
