The resinous secretion (balsam).

Active Principles

Although the oficinal is the benzoin of Sumatra, sometimes also is used the benzoin of Siam (in special in industry, like perfuming)

- Benzoin of Sumatra (Styrax benzoin Driand, Styrax paralleloneurus Perkins): Acidos balsamic (25-30%): cinámico, benzóico and its esters. Acidos triterpenoides derived from the oleanólico: sia-resinólico, sum-resino'lico; vainillina (0,5%).

- Benzoin of Siam (Styrax tonkinensis (Pierre) Craib.): composition similar to the one of Sumatra, with much smaller proportion of cinámico acid, being the main component the benzoate of coniferilo.

Farmacológica Action

Expectorante, antiseptic, antifúngico, healing.

Indications

Bronchitis, bronquiectasias, enfisema, asthma. In topical use: wounds, ulceraciones, dermatomicosis, gingivitis, parodontopatías, acne, forúnculos, eczemas, psoriasis, escaldaduras.

Indirect effect

The steam given off by the benzoin can trigger cough accesses.

The dust resin can cause estornudos and dermatitis of contact, in sensible people.

Galénicas Forms/Dosage

- It draws resin from: 250-500 mg/dosis, two or three takings to the day (like expectorante and pulmonary antiseptic).

- fluid Extract (1:1): 10 to 30 drops, one to three times to the day.

- Dye (1:10) of benzoin: 40-60 drops, one to three times to the day.

- external Use: in form of pomadas, lotions, liniments.
