Scientific Name alacranera coronilla scorpioides SCORPIURUS
Other Names:
Grass of the Scorpion
This peculiar grass is annual and entirely lampiña, raised, generally of not more than two handspans of height. The leaves (except for the inferior ones) are made up of three hojuelas very unequal: the one of in the middle, figure made oval and much greater than the two lateral ones. In the encounter of the superior leaves with the stem the flowers are born, approximately of the same length that the leaf and reunited in yellow to four groups from two florecillas. It is an own plant of territories of work, being distributed by all our geography (in reference to Spain). The scorpiurus or grass of the scorpion - as also is known it blooms between April and June, in July to taking more. Of the harvesting with medicinal aims it interests the plant whole.
The scorpiurus name comes from the peculiar morphology of the fruit; this he is long, narrow, with diverse ceñiduras in his route and one is bent, like the tail of the feared scorpion. This similarity caused that it was used at its time like popular remedy against the punctures of these tiny beasts, although at the present time is not used for this aim.
The scorpiurus contains in all its organs coronilina called glucósido, in addition to a substance characterized being very aromatic. But the aromas do not have to confuse to us at the time of using a plant, since for example in this case it is a quite toxic grass if it is not handled with the due precautions. In the seeds a quite complex composition appears: greasy matters, lecitinas, oleinas, colesterinas and other many compounds of another nature. In fact, the effects of this species are enough similarities to those of the digitalis, that is to say, that directly acts on the heart regulating its operation. The advantage of this grass, or rather, of its active principles, is that they are not accumulated in the organism, reason why can be said that she is less toxic than the digitalis. But in his con we will say that it is a plant little studied and the substances that act on the heart must handle with extreme care, because a failure in the adjustment of the dose can carry serious problems of difficult solution. Therefore its use has not extended. Who knows if in the future properties unknown until now will be discovered, that could even move to digitálicos compounds.
The plant in himself little is used for the reasons that we commented previously. It is preferred to use the isolated active principle, the coronilina; this is taken in very low doses, fixed previously by the doctor, the only sanitary professional enabled to prescribe any remedy. In some zones one is used of vesicant and irritating external form like.
